Becoming a vegetarian can be tough at first, but after a few month’s it gets far easier. That is why we are creating this post, to give you the best chance of avoiding the initial difficulties in becoming a vegetarian and start to enjoy it instead! Firstly, this post is directed mainly towards vegetarians, not vegans. But some of the tips will be useful to both.
Try new recipes
One of the most common mistakes that people first make when they become a vegetarian is to eat exactly the same foods as normal, but without meat. For example, they might just replace some meat that they would have had with a veggie burger or sausages. While there is nothing wrong with doing this for some meals, by doing so you are missing out on the wonderful flavours and aromas of vegetarian foods such as curries which can be amazing for vegetarians. Don’t be too hard on yourself
When you first become vegetarian, you will inevitably make mistakes. You might accidentally eat something which has some meat in it, or you might eat something else which has some strange ingredient that you have never heard of that turns out to not be vegetarian. If this happens, do not worry about it. It is easy to be angry with yourself for not paying attention, but it won’t benefit anyone for you to be annoyed or angry with yourself about it. The main thing to remember is that this happens to every vegetarian.
Prepare yourself for questions
People just love to stick their noses in other people’s business, so make sure that you are prepared to have your diet criticised by the very same people who might live on a diet of pizza, fries, and coca-cola. Be prepared to answer questions such as: How do you get enough protein? Are eggs vegetarian? Can’t you just eat a little bit of meat? But you can eat fish, right? Where do you get iron? These are just a few examples of the questions that you are likely to face from relatives, colleagues, friends, and even strangers.
Don’t avoid going out for meals
When people first become vegetarian, many avoid going out for meals because they are worried about whether there will be any vegetarian options. While 10 or 20 years ago, this may have been the case, more and more mainstream restaurants have vegetarian options so you don’t have to worry about there not being anything to eat. This is especially the case in areas that are more likely to have a higher concentration of vegetarians, such a cities. Vegetarians in rural areas may still find things difficult, however restaurants are getting better and better at catering to vegetarians all the time.
Know where to get your vitamins and minerals
While a vegetarian diet is generally far healthier than a standard western diet, there are some vitamins and minerals that are harder to obtain on a vegetarian diet. The main one’s are Iron, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D. If you are not sure of the best way to obtain these vitamins and minerals on a vegetarians diet, find a guide to vitamins and minerals for vegetarians so that you can be sure that you are obtaining adequate nutrition from your diet.
